The Forgotten Terror of Eternity and the Epidemic of False Grace
We are living in an hour where the church has actively chosen comfort over conviction. In our desperate attempt to be relevant, palatable, and seeker-sensitive, we have systematically eliminated the fear of the Lord from our sanctuaries. We have constructed a cozy, self-centered religious experience that demands absolutely nothing of the believer. But in our pursuit of a sanitized Gospel, we have ignored a terrifying, sobering reality: eternity is at stake, and following Jesus is not a casual commitment.
The modern church has been infected by an unbiblical grace message that is putting the eternal souls of millions at risk. We have been sold a theological bill of goods that suggests salvation is nothing more than a momentary intellectual agreement—repeating a quick prayer at an altar twenty years ago—while we continue to live our lives entirely on our own terms. We profess to know God, but we deny Him by our lifestyles, our apathy, and our refusal to carry our cross.
The Shocking Reality of Hell
The truth that we must aggressively reclaim in this generation is the absolute horror and reality of Hell. It is an unpopular topic. It will not grow a mega-church, and it certainly won't win any popularity contests in a culture of relentless positivity. But if we truly love the lost, and if we genuinely care about the flock God has entrusted to us, we must sound the alarm.
Many Christians will be shocked to find themselves in Hell one day. In The Terror of Hell, I wrote about a visceral, horrific dream the Lord gave me regarding the reality of eternal separation from God. It was a frightening and holy reality that shook me to my core. We cannot afford to view Hell as a metaphor or a mythical concept. It is a place of weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth. It is an eternity completely void of the presence, the comfort, and the breath of God.
When the reality of Hell grips a local body of believers, everything changes. The mundane, predictable church service suddenly feels entirely inadequate. The petty arguments over worship styles or building programs evaporate. When we finally grasp that our neighbors, our family members, and even some sitting in our pews are standing on the precipice of eternal darkness, our hearts must shatter.
Enduring to the End with Fear and Trembling
Salvation for the coming harvest cannot equate to a soft, easy-believism. The Apostle Paul exhorted us to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. Jesus Himself warned that many are called, but few are chosen, and that he who endures to the end will be saved. Enduring to the end requires holiness. It requires hunger. It demands an uncompromising pursuit of the King of Kings.
We must reject the deception that intimacy with God is optional. Like the five foolish virgins in Matthew 25, it is entirely possible to fall asleep, let your oil run dry, and find the door to the marriage feast shut in your face. The Bridegroom is looking for a Bride who is awake, whose lamp is burning brightly, and who is fiercely devoted to Him. We must crucify our flesh, die daily, and surrender our personal ambitions to the consuming fire of the Holy Spirit.
The Call to the Prayer Room
What is the only appropriate response to the terrifying reality of eternity? It is the prayer room.
When the terror of the Lord falls upon a city, the prayer rooms will reopen, and they will be flooded with fire-breathing intercessors. We will transition from a people who ask God for blessings to a holy military that weeps between the porch and the altar for the souls of our region. True intercession is not a scheduled program; it is the agonizing, prevailing cry of a church that refuses to let the lost perish.
It is time to throw off the slumber. It is time to abandon the counterfeit grace that requires no repentance. Let the fear of God grip your heart again. Dive into the Word of God, resolve to live a life of extreme holiness, and let the shock and awe of God's glory redefine your existence. The harvest is waiting, but they need a remnant that is actually awake.
